AHASFV Brags ‘N Tips

Special Olympics World Games

Annmarie Rossi and her Purebred mare Allessa participated in the Special Olympics World Games  July 28 – Aug1 at LAEC Burbank.  Ride On Therapy was put in charge of finding 90 horses for the 125 athletes from 39 countries.  Word was spread through the horse community that they were looking for safe, calm horses that would tolorate these special Olympians . Allessa was evaluated and approved in Feb by Gloria Hamblin of Ride On . After 6 days of acclimating horses and pairing riders with horses competition began.  Allessa was riden in walk /trot division in Dressage, Equitation , Relay and Trail by Darya of Kazakhstan and Hamza of Morocco.  Darya won 3 Silver medals and Hamza won 1 Silver a 4th and 5th. Allessa is by Allionce+/ and out of the Gdasnsk daughter Viva Walessa.  It was tiring , hot work for 10 days but so worth it to see the joy on the faces of these amazing riders. We met many athletes from many countries who petted and hugged and took pictures with Allessa. I was amazed how good some of them spoke english.

I think many of us would find it difficult to go to another country and have 20 min to figure out a horse and then compete.  My “Cute Arab Mare”  gained a lot of respect during the week from the Therapy community and me as she did courses she had never done before.   My favorite moments are Darya finishing her Dressage , saluting the judge and then falling on her horses neck  in a hug, the crowd went nuts. We also arranged through her interpreter to have her come take a picture with Allessa after she got her Silver medal, she took her medal off and put it around the horses neck.  There were a total of 4 Arabians used during the World Games.
