AHASFV Youth News

Join the Youth Judging & Hippology Team!

The Arabian Horse Association, Inc. offers a Novice Horse Judging Contest and a Hippology Contest in conjunction with the Arabian Horse Youth Nationals. The AHASFV and AHA Region 2 offer a unique opportunity to the horse loving youth in our area. Interested youth (ages 8-18) are offered training to correctly evaluate horses and be educated in all things related to horses. All study materials, practices, and team t-shirts are provided free of charge to participating youth.

The requirement for participation is that the youth be willing to assist in fund-raising for the team to travel to Youth Nationals, study horse related materials on their own time, attend a majority of the training practices, and be a member of an AHA Region 2 club. The cost for a Youth to join AHA is $20 for a 1-year membership.

The AHASFV/Region 2 Youth Judging & Hippology Team welcomes more youth members to get involved in 2013. In 2011 and 2012, our team was very successful at Youth Nationals earning Team Championships in Judging and Hippology, as well as multiple individual Top Tens in both competitions!

Come join this energetic group of positive, talented kids and be part of a winning team! If you have any questions, please contact youth coordinator Kandice Watts, 310-909-6802, send E-mail.

2012 Youth Judging & Hippology Team
By: Natalie Zavala

Youth Nationals is what I look forward to every summer. This year we had three girls go to Youth for the judging competition and hippology test. We had two new members who have never been before. Sarah Sheppard and Jordan Krasnoff would Skype with me for hours to study and prepare for the test.

In Albuquerque we stayed at an awesome hotel that served really good breakfast. On our first day we had the judging competition. There were four classes that we had to judge. The classes were western pleasure, hunter pleasure, halter mares, and halter geldings.

During the judging, it was hard for us NOT to talk. We made it through and we were excited to see the results. While waiting, we watched some amazing classes.

I also got Reserve Champion in my age division, 10-13. The ribbons they give us are the same as the ones given if you're showing a horse. Mine hang on the walls in my room. Our first night we ate a free dinner at the hotel and then went swimming. The pool felt nice after a long day.

The next day was our hippology test. Most people ask, “What's hippology? The study of hippos?” Hippology is
actually anything and everything related to horses. It could be parts of a Native Costume or the reproductive tract of the mare or stallion. These were actually posters on the test! At the stations, the time was limited and you have to write down your answers quickly then move on. The test was both easy and hard. Some stations were hard and some were like, “Oh, I know that!”

After hippology we watched an incredible class. One of the horses in Half Arabian English Pleasure was a young mare named Nutcracker Suite. She was my favorite horse in the whole show. After an exhilarating day, we were ready for the awards ceremony. Jordan, Sarah, and I all got Top Ten again. We were bummed out because 4-H beat us, just like last year. However, we all were happy that we all got ribbons and we’re grateful for all the people who helped us fundraise this year and gave us this opportunity. Thank you, and we really enjoyed Youth Nationals!

WANTED: AHASFV Youth Members
The AHASFV is looking for energetic, positive, and fun loving youth that want to work as a team to improve the Arabian horse industry for young people.

You do not need to own a horse to be an active part of most of the activities! If you do own a horse, this is a great opportunity to expand your equestrian activities beyond the show ring. There is something for everyone in this unique Club with many established and successful Youth Programs in place. It's exciting, affordable, and lots of fun!

For more information about how you can get involved with the AMAZING ARABIAN, contact one of our Youth Coordinators.
